A German tourist has appeared in a Melbourne court after allegedly importing more than 1000 child pornography images.

Steffen Wieczorek, 22, was arrested on arrival at Melbourne Airport yesterday after customs officers searched his luggage.

They allegedly discovered more than 1000 images and videos of children engaged in sex acts on his portable hard drive.

Wieczorek was searched after a flight from Germany, via Shanghai.

He appeared briefly today in Broadmeadows Magistrates Court for a mention hearing.

No bail application was made and he was remanded in custody for a further hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow.

He has been charged with one count of importing child pornography.

Customs national manager of investigations Richard Janeczko said several passengers had been detected bringing child pornography into Australia recently.

"Travellers should be aware that Customs officers are on the lookout for pornography breaching customs regulations,'' he said.

"Any material suspected of containing child pornography or other abhorrent acts will be seized and investigated.

"Individuals could face serious criminal code penalties, including a fine of up to $275,000 and, or, 10 years in jail.''
